In the chapter, the writer of Hebrews paints a powerful contrast between two mountains: Mount Sinai and Mount Zion.
At Mount Sinai, God gave the Law through Moses. It was a holy place, but also terrifying. Thunder, fire, darkness, and the sound of a trumpet surrounded the mountain. The Israelites were so overwhelmed by God’s holiness that they were afraid to come near. Sinai represented the old covenant, a relationship with God marked by distance, fear and the weight of the Law.
But Hebrews reminds us that this is no longer the mountain we approach. Instead, we have come to Mount Zion: the city of the living God. Through Jesus, we are welcomed into God’s presence, not with fear, but with joy. Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, has made a way for us to draw near with confidence because of His grace, mercy, and redeeming blood.
HEBREWS 12:22
22But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly
Are you relating to God as though you’re still standing at Mount Sinai—trying to earn His approval or salvation through performance? Or are you living in the freedom of Mount Zion, resting in what Christ has already accomplished?
Today, remember that you have been invited into God’s presence through Jesus. Walk in the confidence, joy and openness that come from the new covenant.
